HELP GET PRISON HEALTH NEWS TO PEOPLE IN PRISON!

by Prison Health News

Imagine a life with no internet and few books. Imagine not knowing what's wrong with your health, and going to the doctor in handcuffs. Many people in prison are not told when they are diagnosed with a chronic illness or informed about which medications they are being given and why. People living with HIV, hepatitis C, diabetes, heart disease, post-traumatic stress, and depression need to know what's going on in their bodies in order to take care of their health.

We may be their only source of health information.

Since 2003, when formerly incarcerated people living with HIV and their allies founded Prison Health News, we have published a quarterly newsletter read by almost 5,000 people in prisons across the country. As a print media project with a wide scope — not a local campaign or service provider — we fall through the cracks between grants. Most publications rely on subscriptions, but all of our resources are free. We are all volunteers: about 50 of us at the moment, including many health care providers. We are working remotely during the pandemic.

Prison Health News has been praised by PBSChicago magazine and Vice, but don't take their word for it — Check out our articles at https://prisonhealthnews.wordpress.com!

Our Advisory Board, mostly of currently and formerly incarcerated people, is a central part of setting PHN’s direction; we pay a stipend for members in prison. And we recently increased our payments to incarcerated writers and artists. People in prison are not allowed to write to each other, so print publications are a vital part of movements for health justice led by people in prison.

  • Your donation of $1 will cover one copy of Prison Health News for a reader in prison.

  • Your donation of $3,000 will print our next issue for all of our readers.
No donation is too small!
